Both Vu Dan Tan and his spouse were captivated by naïve and outsider art.
Vu Dan Tan exhibited a particular fascination with the unusual personalities of artists who either lacked formal education like himself or disregarded the knowledge they gained during their studies. These artists, however, displayed the courage to take risks in creating art that they themselves did not categorize as naïve or outsider art. Natalia Kraevskaia was primarily struck by the thematic diversity and unique, often unsettling aesthetics of these outsiders, who imposed no restrictions on themselves except for their own beliefs regarding what should be deemed art. The couple amassed hundreds of works from such individuals, who, due to their social maladjustment, required financial assistance. The core of their collection comprises works by two artists, Nghiem Xuan Binh and Nguyen Nhu Y, along with one sculptor, Nguyen Khoi.
