Textiles of the Thai ethnic group from Mai Chau

Textiles of the Thai ethnic group from Mai Chau

The compilation of hand-woven textiles from the Thai ethnic group living in Mai Chau, a mountainous district located approximately 140 km east of Hanoi, was initiated by Natalia (Natasha) Kraevskaia, the wife of Vu Dan Tan, starting in 1993.

Her interest extended beyond the aesthetic appeal of the vibrant and captivating ornamental patterns found in Thai weaving; she also engaged in transdisciplinary research exploring the connections between woven imagery and the mythology and folklore of the Thai people. This research, which received backing from both Russian academic institutions and the Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences in the 2010s, sought to enhance the understanding of the Thai people's worldview. Kraevskaia's findings were prominently featured at various international conferences and published in several scholarly articles. Vu Dan Tan, who visited Mai Chau multiple times during the mid-1990s, provided enthusiastic support for this endeavor.
This research is founded on numerous interviews conducted with elders during the 1990s, as well as existing literature and a collection comprising approximately 200 fabric pieces (ranging from one to six meters in length, and each one with several ornamental motifs). This foundation enabled the creation of a comprehensive register of the ornamental motifs of Thai weaving, the identification of their content, the exploration of their symbolism and magical significance in ritual contexts, and, most importantly, the establishment of the connection between the structure and semantics of ornamental patterns and the mythological beliefs and folkloric texts of the Thai people.
